There are different types of gold used for jewelry. Some of very low quality, such as gold plated. Then there is the highest quality of gold, which is pure gold. Just remember to be prepared to pay for the quality of items. Not all gold jewelry are the same but Simplicity Charms is very clear on what is used.
There are many types of gold used in jewelry. 24 karat gold is the purest form and with it is it's high price tag. It is less common to find jewelry in this form. 14 karat is the most common in the market and is still very high in quality. 14 karat gold is pure gold mixed with other yellow alloys in a 14/24 ratio. The other yellow alloys improves its durability and affects the shade of gold, which is why you can find different shades of gold jewelry in the market. There are also other different ratios such as 10/24 and 18/24 known also as 10 karat and 18 karat, respectively. The higher the ratio, the more amount of pure gold it contains, which results in a higher price value. I am planning on adding a few jewelry designs in 14k gold in the near future.
Gold-filled jewelry is usually made from 14kt gold with a core consisting of other alloys such as brass. The layers are bonded by heat and pressure. Gold filled wears, looks and lasts similarly to karat gold because its outer surface is karat gold.
Gold Filled contains significantly more karat gold than plated gold jewelry, which wears off very quickly. Gold Filled will rarely tarnish. In the jewelry industry the quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total product. Therefore, the price of gold filled is more affordable than Karat gold and have become very popular in the recent years.
Rose Gold Filled
Rose gold filled is made very similar to gold filled except instead of karat gold, the rose gold metal outer layer is made from 14kt rose gold alloy surface layer, which is 58% gold, 36% copper, 5% silver and 1% zinc. The quality and durability is the same as gold filled so you can trust that the quality of rose gold filled is high.
Another very good gold option is gold vermeil. It has a sterling silver core center with a thick outer layer plating of gold. Gold Vermeil has a thicker outer layer than regular gold plated jewelry but lesser than gold filled. Therefore, the pricing of this is more affordable than gold filled and a little more pricier than sterling silver.
